If I still wrote about Jewish issues and/or Israel/Palestine (which I don't) this is what I would be writing about the Keith Ellison nonsense
This shameful treatment of Ellison is a natural outcome of organized American-Judaism ceding our identity as Jews to a modern-day nation-state.
The ADL isn't sure if Steve Bannon, an actual anti-Semite, is an anti-Semite, because he's willing to back Israel's occupation & RightWing government.
The ADL is sure that Keith Ellison, a good man who is NOT AN ANTI-SEMITE, is an anti-Semite, because he's willing to argue with Israel's government.
The machinations of Israeli politicians trying to hold on to land that DOESN'T BELONG TO THEM is a geo-political issue, not a Jewish one.
The dog whistles and stated animus of many in Trump's circle toward Jews, on the other hand, IS a Jewish issue. It is anti-Semitism. It is Jew hatred.
But years ago, the organized American-Jewish community chose to make being an American-Jew all about having a collective crush on Israel, come what may.
So when faced with a good man devoted to the wellbeing of all INCLUDING THE JEWISH STATE,we can't handle that he won't demonize Palestinians.
We call the failure to demonize Palestinians anti-Semitism. It is not.
Calling on Israel to behave morally & responsibly and in keeping with its own international agreements, as Keith Ellison has done, ISN'T ANTI-SEMITISM
But when we outsource our own identity as Jews to a modern-day political construct, this is where we find ourselves.
I'm teaching my kids to love Israel as their home (we're Israelis),demand justice for Palestinians (as decency and Jewish values demand) and and to define their Judaism by their Judaism - NOT by the political decisions of a modern-day government without a moral compass.
NOT TO MENTION: The insistence that an American political party make this decision based on what's "best" for another country comes perilously close to reifying the dangerous (and anti-Semitic!) idea that American Jews have, by nature, split/dual loyalties.
But I no longer write about these issues.
